Portfolio - a collection of my work - November 2018

Portfolio - a one-page collection of my work

Welcome

Below are a few of my animations, followed by drawings of moving people then some artwork and finally some stills from animations. This is best viewed on a computer screen rather than a mobile device. You can click on the images to see them larger and you can expand the videos to view them full-screen.

Animations

Grandad Go and Buy the Bread!

I made this in honour of Idylio who goes out to get the bread. Also to salute 'Carnaval del Guaso', the Carnival of Guantanamo city, Cuba. It's a simple animation, but I'm pleased with the timing of the character's movements with the music, he has some smart Conga moves and it's clear he's having a good time. The music is the conga 'La Chambelona' which was the title of the very first animation ever made in Cuba.

La Charanguera

An animation exploring Cuban Son movements to music by Charanga del Norte 'Susana Te Pone a Gozar' (Susan have fun). The character has good timing with the music and she shows the shoulder and hip movements of Son and some of the steps.

The Little Rose Shoes (Trailer)

The Little Rose Shoes tells the story of a little Cuban girl from a rich family, who gives her best shoes away. It is based on the poem for children of the same name by the Cuban poet José Martí. Notice the swing of the mother's hips as they walk together to the sea.

Travelling Around the World

A stop-motion animation using recycled materials with photos. The helicopter is made of a kitchen spray and yogurt bottles and my cool pilot's outfit is made from things I had around the house. I also created the sound for this piece. I've travelled a lot in my life, but this was the first time I flew a helicopter.

Makuta

Makuta is an Afro-Cuban dance I have often performed. It is one of the Congo genre of dances. I created this with a 3d animation software tool. I was able to make the character's movements quite good, except that the feet don't touch the floor properly. I'm quite pleased with the 3d background but the software has its limitations for the characters. The music is a Makuta recording.

Sketches of the body in movement.

I draw constantly. These are some of the quick line drawings I've been doing to describe the body in movement.

Environments and Backgrounds for Animation

Colonial House

This is a scene from an animation I'm working on in which animated chairs dance in formation in an elegant ballroom. This image actually a shot of a 3d environment. The camera zooms in to the front door to show the ballroom interior below where the chairs will dance.

Colonial House Interior: Arabic Salon

The ballroom scene for the dancing chairs. The camera can move around this space in Adobe After Effects as the animated chairs dance in formation.

Interior Mexican Colonial House

A scene for a dance performance, again the camera can move within the space during the animation.

Cuban country scene

A scene for a story about Cuban farmers.
